Omar Daniel has a love for the game of basketball that started when he was 8 years old. He played recreation basketball and summer basketball on Martha’s Vineyard and the parks in NYC. Omar learned the importance of basketball fundamentals on outdoor courts all over the Northeast. The lessons he learned on the outdoor courts helped him become a 3 year starter on his Ossining High School basketball team. Omar in his senior year averaged 20 points a game and was selected to the All Westchester County Team in 1989.

Omar used his 20 years of knowledge and started coaching in youth basketball leagues and camps. In 2002 on the island of Martha’s Vineyard. He started a 3 on 3 basketball tournament with the help of his lifelong basketball mentor Mike Daniel. Omar realized that basketball had declined on Martha’s Vineyard. He wanted to bring back the good times, he experienced as a kid growing up at Niantic Park, Martha’s Vineyard.

Today Omar has continued this tournament for 10 plus years and has seen it grow to over 100 youth. Omar has hosted the tournament in Douglasville, GA 3 times . Douglasville is a small suburb 25 miles outside of Atlanta. Omar has moved down south from New York and has seen unsafe and lack of care to the outdoor basketball courts in his town. 2013 will be the first year The Vineyard Streetball Classic will be launched in Douglasville, GA to help improve and bring awareness to the need of outdoor basketball. Omar has dedicated his time to the game and will share his passion with the youth across the country, were ever there is a need for basketball.

Mike played for the vineyard varsity from 1978-1981; in his senior season he won cape and islands scoring title, also was leading vote getter for cape and island all-star team and named MVP of league, which led to try out for top 48 in eastern mass where he was a finalist. Upon completion of high school mike went on to play at Fayetteville state university (North Carolina) before transferring to New York institute of technology (long island, NY) Niantic Park in the summer leauge. There were different levels, college division, Semi-Pro Division, ABA division and the NBA division. The great thing about that league there was a division for each age group, and not only that, in the mornings from 9-12 there was also a skills camp that taught the kids about the game.

Over the years as mike started to come back to the vineyard he realized that there were not a lot of kids taking advantage of the park and the leagues along with his nephew omar who also grew up playing in the same summer league, and a few other friends got together to see what they could do to make the park fun again. What they came up with was The Vineyard Streetball Classic 3on3 basketball tournament to be held 4th of July weekend the first year being 2002.This past summer was the 10th year it has grown each year with the help of Local businesses and sponsors and volunteers. It is a fun day for the kid’s music, food, and great basketball, also this past year The Vineyard Streetball Classic was able to partner with the Martha’s Vineyard Boy’s and Girl’s club to help raise money to send youth’s to their summer camp.
